Mark is Professor Emeritus of Education with extensive expertise in Experiential Pedagogies and Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning. He leads research at Ethical Activities CIC, focusing on social equity in outdoor learning and adventure education. He is interested in playfulness, Forest School, place-based education, and the therapeutic approached of Blue and Green Spaces.

Mark’s cutting-edge research in education is demonstrated through his academic publishing, presentations at international conferences, PhD supervision, and PhD examinations.  He is passionate about working with students of all ages and diversities, from whatever their background and life aspirations, embracing the different challenges they bring.

Through his leadership role at Ethical Activities CIC, Mark drives forward research initiatives that examine how outdoor learning and adventure education can be made more accessible and equitable across diverse communities. His work addresses barriers to participation and develops inclusive approaches that ensure outdoor education benefits all learners, regardless of their socioeconomic background or circumstances.

Mark previously served as co-convenor for the British Educational Research Association’s Nature Outdoor Learning and Play special interest group, positioning him at the forefront of academic discourse in his field.

His extensive experience spans diverse educational sectors, including secondary education, residential education, outdoor centres, American summer camps, and sailing schools. This broad background informs his research approach and deepens his understanding of how outdoor learning can be implemented across different contexts and communities.

Mark remains passionate about international and cultural opportunities, both in his research collaborations and in creating pathways for broader participation in outdoor education experiences. He was a Guest Professor at the University of Iceland from 2022-2025.

Mark is available for consultancy and media work, bringing his research expertise in social equity and outdoor learning to organisations seeking to understand and develop more inclusive practices.
